Many a times during journeys we have come across huge tank reservoirs on the side of the roads, in the shape of a square or round, a top large concrete towers. The tower made to erect the tank stands like a showpiece which display the beam and the column. The tower is not known to have been used for any other purpose. But in kinfra industrial park in Ottappalam, Palaghat District, the idea of using the empty and unused space below the water tank has been introduced.The space has been converted into an office of three stories. A fresh start has been commenced. Most of these water tank are built by water authority, which is under the jurisdiction of the government. Hence no one tries for any construction here. Such attempts have been made in the houses and small buildings under water tanks. But the one of this kind in a government project is something new.
S. Gopakumar, an accomplished architect, who has been a part of several projects by the government has proved that this is possible. The water reservoirs in Kerala have been standing like scarecrows till date. This may be because of the doubts and fears concerning its security or the unawareness of construction under a tank reservoir. In stadium like spaces such construction are possible. But this pioneering venture allays any fears and doubts about such a construction. A three storied building has been constructed here and given on rent to various companies.
With better security system
Two entrance have been given separately on both sides – one for the water tank and the other for the office. Its water capacity is 5 lakh litres. Security arrangements are made and special terrace around the circumference of the tank has been made, through which we can walk. We realise that this is a water tank, only if we set our eyes on the top of the building. The entrance to the commercial area has been designed in keeping with modern Trend. We don’t have much people to lead the path and fly on Wings of transformation. This new trend will bring about 2 drastic change, since architecture is not only about constructing houses and buildings. It should be about showing the way for fresh start, inventions and experiments.
